Laser Nail Therapy Q & A

What is laser nail therapy?

Laser nail therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to heat up and eliminate nail fungus. It can provide long-term relief if you have a fungal infection and are tired of taking oral medication or applying topical ointments to your nails.

Who benefits from laser nail therapy?

Make a laser nail therapy appointment at Columbus Foot & Ankle, P.C., if your toenails are:

  • Distorted
  • Thick
  • Brittle, crumbly, or ragged
  • Discolored
  • Foul-smelling

After a discussion of your symptoms and an in-office exam, your provider can determine the best treatment.

How does laser nail therapy work?

At Columbus Foot & Ankle P.C., laser nail therapy is a quick outpatient procedure. When you arrive at the office, you remove your shoes and socks and lie down on an exam table. Next, your provider cleans and sterilizes your feet and points the handheld Q-clear laser at your toenails.

The Q-clear laser emits two wavelengths of light that penetrate your nails. The light heats up and destroys the toenail fungus as well as the surrounding skin and nail. What’s more, treatment provides a sterilizing effect, preventing the fungal infection from recurring.

Each treatment session takes 30-45 minutes. Your provider makes sure to direct the laser light at all of your toes.

Does laser nail therapy provide instant results?

It typically takes several months to notice results from laser nail therapy. You might also have to undergo multiple treatments depending on the severity of your fungal infection. Be patient, follow your provider’s instructions, and attend each of your treatment sessions.

Is there any way to prevent toenail fungus?

There’s no way to prevent toenail fungus completely, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. The team at Columbus Foot & Ankle, P.C. recommends:

  • Washing your feet regularly
  • Trimming your toenails straight across
  • Wearing socks that absorb your sweat
  • Wearing shoes that let your feet breathe

If you use public facilities, like gyms, spas, or swimming pools, it’s also important to wear shoes or sandals.

Don’t let fungal toenails keep you from living your best life. Request a laser nail therapy consultation at Columbus Foot & Ankle, P.C., by calling the office or clicking the online booking feature today.
